Why Do Light Fractions and Odor Remain in the Product?

In traditional batch reactor systems, water and part of the low-boiling hydrocarbons are removed by heating. However, without controlled vacuum operation, effective vapor–liquid contact, and a dedicated fractionation stage, some light hydrocarbons remain dissolved in the base oil or recondense into the product during cooling.

Acid and clay treatment mainly reduce polar contaminants, oxidation products, color-forming compounds, and sludge precursors. Filtration removes suspended solids and spent clay, but it cannot separate dissolved volatile compounds from the liquid oil phase.

These residual light hydrocarbons and odor-causing volatile organic compounds increase product volatility, depress the flash point, and create a persistent odor.

Note : This system is not an alternative to a modern re-refining plant. It is a practical product-upgrading module developed for operators who are not yet ready to replace their traditional reactor system.

Superheated Steam Stripping for Deep Odor Removal

Inside the stripping column, preheated recovered base oil flows downward while dry superheated steam rises in the opposite direction. This counter-current contact lowers the partial pressure of volatile odor-causing compounds and transfers them from the oil phase into the vapor phase. The removed odor molecules and residual light hydrocarbons leave from the top of the column together with the steam, then pass to the condensation and separation system. The treated, deodorized oil is collected from the bottom. This physical separation process reduces persistent odors, removes remaining volatile contaminants, and helps improve flash point and overall product consistency without adding chemicals to the oil.
